Seniors Reminisce - Interview with Madlyn Rice

Parkwood Village Resident - Madlyn Rice

Madlyn Rice also graciously shared her fond recollections. One particular Christmas memory, when she was four years old, is a tale (pun intended) of a special gift hidden behind the tree. It was a large box, with air holes in the top! What do you think to their wondering eyes should appear? The gift was “a gorgeous little puppy!” He had long blonde hair, and they named him Mickey. He remained the family dog for many years. He seemed to rather favor her, though! He must’ve been an agreeable little fellow, as she dressed him in doll clothes. That is so cute!

As she grew older, there was always a big Christmas dinner at her grandmother’s. They had simple foods, as the men didn’t like casseroles very well. Of course, pie was enjoyed! Madeline’s favorites are pecan pie- and cherry pie too. She loves both!

One memorable Christmas, she wanted to surprise her husband with a new chair. She purchased it, and had the gift hidden at her in-laws’ home. Well, they all opened their presents, but there was a note under the tree for her husband to go look in his parents’ room. He was delighted upon finding the chair! Her father-in-law pointed out to Madlyn there were more packages with her name on them. She laughed, telling us that he’d had the same idea, and gifted her with matching end tables and lamps! In her words, “It was a double surprise; it was fun!”

She recalls how her daughter loved to set the table with silverware, and the twelve-piece set of crystal which Madlyn had received as gifts at various times. Her daughter has now been gifted those by her mom and can carry on that tradition in her own home. Madlyn seems very pleased for that to continue.

Gathering together is a recurring theme with these four family-oriented ladies! They all seemed very happy to recall and share these reminiscences. This year, let’s all take time to gather, reflect, and enjoy one another!
